Why do people compare themselves to others? Every time a comparison begins, it creates insecurity, dissatisfaction, and restlessness. It prompts a person to copy someone else. They may even wish to become someone else. None of that leads to wisdom.
Some individuals become jealous or even envious when their lives do not match what another person has. The list of things people compare never ends. People compare material things, physical and personality traits. They also compare education, career, financial status, and many other petty details.
Comparing one life to another is like a child wanting the same toy another child has. There is nothing wrong with wanting good things. Nonetheless, envy is poisonous to the soul. It can destroy a person from the inside.
Jealousy can motivate someone to work harder for what they want. But envy is different. Envy clouds judgment. It can push a person to spend money they do not have just to impress others. It can also lead someone to hurt another emotionally or socially simply because they desire what the other person has.
As adults, people can work as hard as they choose to achieve the things they desire. They can be patient with their progress and trust their own timing. The healthiest approach is to keep comparison to a minimum — or avoid it entirely.
The most meaningful competition is the one a person has with themselves.
If someone wants to look better, they can put in the effort.
If they want to grow, they can learn more.
If they want to improve, they can invest time in developing their skills.
People can learn from one another. They ask honest questions that make others eager to open up. They grow through genuine connection. When individuals complement each other with sincerity, they grow together. And importantly, each person is one of a kind — unique in a way no one else can ever replicate.
When individuals compete with themselves, they progress. They become who they are on this earth, fulfilling their own purpose — not someone else’s.
People around us are who they are. The success they have achieved does not take away from our own success. Their beauty does not diminish ours. Their journey does not replace ours.
When comparison fades, the world becomes a more colorful place — filled with peace, beauty, and love.
Live with kindness.
Live with love.
